Zachary Taylor, often referred to as "Old Rough and Ready," was the 12th President of the United States of America and is known for his military successes that brought him national fame and eventually the highest office in the land. His tenure as president was short, however, as he died just 16 months after his inauguration in 1850.
Taylor was born in Orange County, Virginia, in 1784 and came from a prominent planter family. The family moved to Kentucky during his childhood, where he spent most of his life. Although he grew up in the frontiersman culture of rural Kentucky, he was firmly rooted in the Southern aristocracy, owning plantations and keeping slaves.
His military career began in 1808 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his decades of service, Taylor fought in a number of military conflicts, including the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Seminole War in Florida. His greatest fame, however, came during the Mexican-American War, when he played a pivotal role in several important battles and was praised for his intrepidity and tactical skills.
In private life, Taylor married Margaret "Peggy" Mackall Smith in 1810, and the couple had six children. One of their children, Sarah Knox Taylor, married future Confederate President Jefferson Davis, but she died young. Another daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Taylor, married Army son William Wallace Smith Bliss, and her story is another example of the intertwining of military and politics in Taylor's life.
Zachary Taylor's presidency was marked by escalating controversy over slavery and its expansion in the newly acquired territories of the West. Although a slaveholder himself, Taylor tried to find middle ground in the debate, which caused resentment among many of his southern supporters. His sudden death in 1850 left many unanswered questions regarding the future of the country, which eventually culminated in the Civil War.
Zachary Taylor remains a complex figure in American history - a war hero turned president and a Southerner who tried to hold the nation together during one of its most turbulent periods.
