The DNA profile of the Russian Tsar family
In July 1991, remains were exhumed from a mass grave outside Yekaterinburg, Russia. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA allowed these bodies to be assigned to the Romanovs, the last Russian tsarist family to be shot in July 1918.
Tsar Nicholas II belonged to haplogroup T in the maternal line and to haplogroup R1b in the paternal line.
