The DNA of the Habsburgs
The Habsburgs, also known as the House of Habsburg, are one of the most significant royal families in European history, known for their role as rulers of Austria, Spain and other territories. The dynasty was founded around the 10th century in the Holy Roman Empire and exercised its power in Europe until 1918.
The Habsburgs originated in Switzerland, more precisely in Aargau. The dynasty's ancestral castle was located on the territory of the homonymous municipality of Habsburg. From there, they steadily expanded their territory eastward until they finally acquired the Duchies of Austria and Styria in the 13th century. From this time on, the Duchy of Austria became the center of the Habsburg possessions.
The Habsburgs pursued a shrewd policy of marriage, which enabled them to expand their territory considerably. This policy, often summarized by the saying "Bella gerant alii, tu, felix Austria, nube!" (May others wage wars, you, happy Austria, marry!) led to the Habsburgs being able to make many terrtorial gains over time without risking armed conflict. This policy even went so far that the marriage of Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy in the 15th century brought the far-flung Burgundian territories - including what are now the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg - into the Habsburg domain.
In the 16th century, the House of Habsburg split into two lines - the Spanish and the Austrian. The Spanish line ruled until the 18th century and eventually became extinct, sparking a number of significant European conflicts, including the War of the Spanish Succession. The Austrian line continued and in the 19th century became the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty, which founded the Austrian Empire and ruled until its end in 1918.
The Habsburgs are also known for their frequent physical features, caused by centuries of marriage within their own family to maintain power. The most famous example is the conspicuous "Habsburg lip".
In summary, the House of Habsburg shaped European history for centuries through territorial gains, marriages, and political maneuvering. In modern genetics, the Habsburgs offer an interesting object of study because of their remarkably consistent genetic profile. Despite the end of their reign over a century ago, their impact on Europe and the world remains a lasting legacy.
The Habsburgs belong to haplogroup R-M343 in the pure paternal line.
